Why you should visit Krakow, Poland in 2024
Nestled in the heart of Poland, Krakow is a city where history, culture, and vibrant modern life intersect in a seamless blend. It’s got everything a modern European city needs, but offers it all at a fraction of the cost when compared with other destinations. If you’re planning your travels for 2024, Krakow should be at the top of your list. It’s time to start looking and plan your trip.
Getting There
Krakow is home to a major international airport (KRK) meaning that getting to the city from the UK or other European destinations is extremely convenient. Prices are also incredibly reasonable, with return flights from London Gatwick costing as little as £56. Once you land, head straight to the taxi rank outside the airport and you’ll be able to grab an Uber into the city centre with ease, again at a very reasonable price.
Accommodation
Whether you stay in the Old Town itself or just outside within walking distance, you won’t be disappointed when it comes to hotel options. Like everything in the city, prices are incredibly affordable and you don’t have to pay over the odds for a fantastic hotel stay. I stayed at the Mercure Hotel just outside of Krakow train station. This offers a location right next to a shopping centre where you can indulge in some purchases if you so wish, yet you’re still only 10 minutes walk away from the historic city centre, offering you the best of both worlds. Not to mention this hotel was impeccable, stylish and spotless, filled with helpful staff more than willing to help.
Food and Drink
When searching for food in Krakow you won’t be disappointed. The city’s Old Town district offers an international medley of dining options, with everything from authentic Polish cuisine to Argentinian steakhouses. From my own personal experience, the food in this city is to die for, it’s some of the best I’ve ever had! Couple this with the fact you can eat at these restaurants for a bargain price and it’s easy to see why Krakow is an appealing destination for foodies.
Budget Friendly
Compared to many European destinations, Krakow offers incredible value for money! Here’s a breakdown of some of the costs you can expect when coming to visit:
Flights - £56 return flights from London Gatwick (Wizz Air)
Airport Transfers - £12 (Uber)
Accommodation - £114 per night (Mercure Stare Miasto)
Auschwitz Day Tour - £8 per person (GetYourGuide)

Top Attractions
You can spend hours navigating Krakow Old Town, dipping in and out of the shops and cafés, taking in the stunning architecture and mingling with the extremely welcoming locals.
First timers to Krakow simply cannot leave without visiting the nearby Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. It’s an incredibly somber but essential experience, showcasing the atrocities that took place at the most infamous concentration camps used by the Nazis in World War II.
The nearby Wieliczka Salt Mine, a UNESCO world heritage site, offers a fascinating subterranean adventure.
Head to the Jewish quarter in the city and you’ll be met with a completely different ambiance. Its cobbled streets and bohemian vibe make for a stark contrast to the rest of the city but it simply cannot be missed.
A short trip to the Tatra Mountains provides opportunities for hiking, skiing, and enjoying breathtaking scenery. The serene beauty of the Vistula River offers leisurely boat rides and picturesque views.

In 2024, Krakow is poised to captivate visitors with its timeless charm, dynamic cultural scene, and the promise of unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, a nature lover, or simply looking for a beautiful place to explore, Krakow has something special to offer.
